Port of Barcelona handled a record 28.6 million tonnes (mt) of cargo in the first half of the year, representing year-on-year growth of 18%.

The stellar performance was attributed to container volumes rising 27.2% to 1.3 million Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit(TEU), liquid bulk (+10.9%) and freight shipped by motorways of the sea (+7.2%).

In the first six months, transshipment containers increase by 101%, while full import and export containers rose 4.5% and 4.7% respectively, compared to the same period in 2016.

It should be noted that for the first time, import containers amounted to 276,529 TEU this half year, surpassing the pre-crisis record of 272,138 TEU achieved in 2007.
