The average all-in air freight buy rate across 21 major east-west trade lanes rose by 5.3% in May, compared to the same month last year, to reach USD 2.78 per kilogramme.

However, prices were lower than in April when airlines attained a rate of USD 2.87 per kg due to declines on the transpacific.

Looking ahead, the consultant forecasts an improvement in June: "Drewry's east-west Airfreight Price Index fell by 3.1% month-on-month in May due to lower rates on Asia to North America.

"The index is now about 5.3% above the same month last year, indicating strong underlying market fundamentals."
