Civil Aviation Policy envisages growth of air cargo volumes to 10 mt by 2027 29 August 2017

The National Civil Aviation Policy has envisaged growth of air freight volumes to 10 million tonnes (mt) by 2027.

As per data maintained by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), air freight handled at Indian airports grew by more than 20 times from 0.08 million metric tonnes (mmt) in 1972-73 to 2.5 mmt in 2014-15, and its compound annual growth rate (CAGR) was 8.8% during 2013-14 to 2016-17.

Measured in million tonne-kilometers, the data maintained by the World Bank also shows that air freight transported by India went up from 96.3 million tonne-kilometers in 1970 to 1,833.8 million tonne-kilometers in 2015.

Vistara to restart New Delhi-Varanasi services in October 26 August 2017

Vistara has said it will resume daily flight services from New Delhi to the temple city of Varanasi from October 10.

The Tata SIA-run airline had discontinued services to the city in Uttar Pradesh in March this year due to operational reasons.

“Vistara is delighted to reintroduce daily non—stop flights between New Delhi and Varanasi starting October 10,” the airline said in a statement today.

It has also introduced special introductory one-way fare of INR 1,500 without taxes to attract customers.

Ethiopian Airlines to purchase 59 more aircraft from now until 2025 25 August 2017

Ethiopian Airlines (ET) plans to purchase 59 aircraft between now and 2025 under its medium-term growth plan that forecasts annual revenue will reach USD 25 billion by 2025, up from unaudited revenue of USD 2.71 billion in 2016/2017.

Unveiling the expansion plan to journalists at the airline's headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the manager of ET-Holidays, Seble Wongel Azene, said the airline will expand its network to over 120 destinations by 2025 by which time it hopes to fly 22 million passengers annually.

Air Odisha & Air Deccan to start services by Sept 30 under RCS 1 25 August 2017

A senior Government official said that Air Odisha and Air Deccan, the two airlines which won the right to operate the maximum number of flights under the Government’s first round of regional air connectivity scheme (RCS), will begin operations before September 30.

R.N. Choubey, Secretary, Civil Aviation, said, “The two airlines will be in a position to procure and mount flights by September 30, which is the cut off for launching flights under RCS 1. They might not be able to launch flights to some airports for a couple of months because of renovation of the airport and not for want of aircraft.”

IGI airport to get new integrated terminal 23 August 2017

Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport will get a new integrated terminal like T3, under the facility's expansion plans.

The expansion plan for the airport was revealed by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the operator of IGI airport, here on Tuesday.

According to DIAL, the budget passenger carriers' departure terminal T1D and terminal T1C will be merged into one and expanded to accommodate 40 million passengers per annum.

Alliance Air to start 4 new services from August 30 21 August 2017

Alliance Air, the regional arm of Air India, is starting four daily return flights from Chennai to Tiruchi, Vijaywada, Madurai and Coimbatore.

The new services will start from August 30. A senior airline official said that these flights have become possible because the airline’s management decided to base one ATR 72-600 aircraft in Chennai.

Officials said that the four new flights have been put into the reservation system and passengers can now make bookings for flying these routes.

SpiceJet hikes excess baggage fee on local fights 19 August 2017

SpiceJet has hiked the amount that passengers will have to pay for excess baggage on domestic flights.

Passengers who pre-book 5 kg of additional baggage for a domestic flight will now be charged INR 2,850 more, up from the earlier INR 500.

An additional 30 kg will cost INR 8,550 more, up from INR 8,000. Sources said that if a passenger reaches the airport and then decides to pay for the excess baggage, he/she will be charged a flat per kg rate over and above the entitled free baggage allowance.

Flight services start again in Puducherry 17 August 2017

Flight services resumed from the Union Territory, with the launch of services between Puducherry and Hyderabad.

Chief Minister V Narayanasamy accorded a warm reception to passengers on their arrival at Puducherry airport in neighbouring Lawspet by private carrier Spicejet.

He had earlier inaugurated the daily flight service linking Puducherry with Hyderabad and Vijayawada. Narayanasamy handed over to each of the 78 passengers boarding passes for the newly introduced service to Hyderabad.


New air cargo facility at Chennai airport 14 August 2017

A new cargo facility was launched at the Chennai airport recently.

The facility was inaugurated by Airports Authority of India (AAI) chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra, who said that the airport, which handled INR 186 crore worth of cargo last year — a growth of 27% from the previous year was set for a major boost in this regard.

The facility has been built at a cost of INR 3 crore and is spread over 1,500 square meter.

The airport currently handles about 90,000 tonnes of cargo and will have three more such terminals next year.

AAI planning international air cargo facility at Coimbatore airport 12 August 2017

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to have a world-class international cargo facility in Coimbatore to tap the export cargo business in a year.

Inaugurating a new 1500square meter domestic cargo terminal at Chennai airport on Friday, AAI chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra export cargo from Coimbatore - which is a manufacturing hub -- is being routed through Kochi.

"We want to capture that business. The facility should be built in a year. The airport is doing good in cargo but we want to expand international cargo."
